The University of Windsor has been provided with funding to support its intellectual property capabilities.
Intellectual Property Ontario (IPO) has granted the school $300,000 to fortify its intellectual property abilities.
Intellectual property is defined by the World Intellectual Property Organization as "creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, and symbols, names and images used in commerce."
U of W will use the money in its Office of Research Partnership, for advancing technology transfers and nurturing industry partnerships.
"The University of Windsor and the Windsor-Essex community have a strong roster of inventors and innovators who develop new technologies that will shape how we live, work, and play," said Vice President of Research and Innovation Dr. Shanthi Johnson. "The support from IPON will greatly increase our ability to bring those inventions to the marketplace."
U of W has also created a partnership with Brock University, which involves a technology transfer internship program, along with more marketing and intellectual property educational opportunities.
"We’re thrilled to extend funding to ten new postsecondary recipients to support their efforts to build IP capacity and better support their researchers and innovators," said IPO CEO Dan Herman. "This funding will help institutions across the province more effectively translate research into commercializable innovations while ensuring the IP at their foundation is appropriately developed and protected."
