WPS has new approach to tackle intimate partner violence

The Windsor Police Service is taking a new approach to intimate partner violence.

In 2024, 45 per cent of all assaults investigated by police have been intimate partner violence.

"Through COVID there were a few things that really took a climb in our data and one of them was intimate partner violence. It was very obvious, people were locked at home, many people were drinking, doing drugs, that kind of thing and we saw the number skyrocket. That's one of the things so far that we haven't seen much decrease," said Deputy Chief Jason Crowley.

The Windsor Police Service is now using data to track repeat calls more closely and scheduling more follow-ups with victims.

"We'll contact that victim maybe by Zoom at a time that's good for them and then we're learning a lot more about history, about previous assaults things like that," said Crowley.

Crowley said they are also reaching out to community partners to identify possible partnerships moving forward.
