Public school board looks ahead with budget consultations

Windsor-Essex's English-language public school board has already started work on its spending plan for the 2024-25 school year.

The Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) has begun its budget preparations and has turned to the public for input.

The board is gathering information as it tailors the budget to enhance its multi-year Strategic Plan, which addresses student success through three priorities, which are creating confident learners, engaging communities, and demonstrating ethical stewardship.

As is with school boards across Ontario, the GECDSB is held to certain funding guidelines.

"Approximately 95 per cent of GECDSB funding is provided by the Ministry of Education using a funding formula known as the Grants for Student Needs (GSN)," read the survey from the board. "This formula is applied consistently to each of the 72 district school boards in Ontario. The GSN is allocated with limited flexibility. For example, special education funding provided in the GSN must be spent on special education programs."

The board has a survey where people can provide insight on what they hope to see in the budget.

The survey is live until 5 p.m. on March 1.
