Essex to host provincial lifeguard championships

Lifeguards from across Ontario will compete next weekend at the Essex Recreation Complex in a competition that will test their water rescue skills.

The provincial championship for certified and assistant lifeguards is February 17 from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Competitors will test the skills, fitness, knowledge, and judgement learned in National Lifeguard and Bronze Cross courses in simulated situations.

They'll compete in teams of two and four in scenarios involving multiple victims with simulated injuries both in the pool and at the poolside. They'll need to provide a quick assessment and treatments within two minutes. In the water, teams will supervise a pool setting during an open swim and respond to all incidents.

Both the International Olympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation recognize the sport.
