UWindsor to face budget challenges next year

Despite growing budget pressures on the horizon, University of Windsor president Robert Gordon is optimistic about the future of the institution.

Gordon presented his annual State of University Address on Wednesday morning highlighting the successes of the past year.

Those include improved school rankings, the start of construction for a new student residence and the release of the Carbon Neutrality Masterplan.

Looking ahead, Gordon indicated the university will be focusing on balancing the upcoming budget with changes to provincial funding and the international student cap creating challenges.

"One of the benefits of that announcement was that it doesn't impact graduate students. We have a large proportion of our international student enrolment at the maters and PHD level so that will lessen the impact of it," said Gordon.

Undergraduate international students make up only 5 per cent of all full-time students at the university while international graduate students make up about 25 per cent.

"We are a comprehensive university and we have a clear responsibility to provide talent for the next generation of this region first and foremost and certainly that will be a key decision point for anything that will be part of our budget planning activities moving forward," said Gordon.

Enrollment at the university has increased 13 per cent since 2017 but is expected to level off in 2024.
