No city-wide speed limit reduction

The speed limit throughout City of Windsor neighbourhoods will not see a blanket reduction to 40 km/hr.

But more traffic calming measures will come into effect this year as the Vision Zero master plan is implemented.

Many councillors were originally in favour of reducing the speed limit throughout the city but Shawna Boakes, the executive director of operations and deputy engineer, argued that changing the signs will not change driver's behaviour.

Instead, the city will start the process of evaluating traffic patterns and reducing speeds on some neighbourhood streets to encourage drivers to stay on collector roads.

"Moving forward in a more surgical approach that administration outlined today, that makes sense, that allows us to make tweaks and changes to keep traffic where we want it, to ensure that there's not cut through traffic into residential roads that it shouldn't be in, I think that's the way to go," said Councillor Fred Francis.

The entire Vision Zero plan that includes 42 different initiatives will take years to fully implement. The goal is to see zero fatalities or serious injuries within 15 years.
