Windsor Regional Hospital has seized over 1,100 items since installing increased security measures at its emergency departments.
On October 19, EVOLV detectors, sensor technology with artificial intelligence, were installed at the entrances to detect weapons like handguns or knives.
"What this does is provide protection, not only to our staff, but other patients and visitors. Them knowing that when they walk through not only are they walking through but the person next to them is walking through as well, so hopefully that provides more comfort," said David Musyj, CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital.
There have been 600 knives seized as well as illegal drugs and brass knuckles. No guns have been seized from people entering the emergency departments.
Musyj said they are still considering installing additional monitors at the other entrances at the hospital.
"We're not quite there yet but it sure is trending in that direction that we would be looking at this technology on a much broader scale to other parts of the hospital considering the numbers," said Musyj.
