More than 11,000 elementary and secondary school students could be suspended from school in March because their immunization records are out-of-date.
Last year, more than 25,000 students had out-of-date immunization records. Nearly 2,000 students were ultimately suspended after their parents received several notices and reminders.
All students overdue for one or more vaccines or who have not submitted their updated records were given notices at school last week.
Families with elementary school students have until March 1, while those with kids in high school have until March 8 to update their records with the health unit. If not, they face a suspension of up to 20 days.
Primary care providers will typically give these vaccines.
If a family received a notice and the child has already received the missing vaccine, it may be that the records are simply out of date.
