County road workers have a new contract

Essex County Council has ratified a new three-year contract for workers in the roads division of its Infrastructure Services department.

The workers will get a 3.38 per cent wage increase in the first year of the agreement, 2.98 per cent in the second and 3.01 per cent in the third.

It also gives them better benefits, enhances procedures governing vacations, scheduling, holidays, and overtime, and gives them September 30, the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation off with pay.

"This is a fair deal that respects our hard-working employees, as well as taxpayers," said County CAO Sandra Zwiers.

The contract covers 34 workers, including operators, mechanics, lead hands, and traffic signal electricians who work on 1,503 kilometres of roads in all seven county municipalities.

Members of Teamsters Local 879 ratified the contract last week.
