Ontario's law-enforcement oversight agency has ended its probe into the death of an Amherstburg man earlier this year.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked its mandate after the January 17 incident.
Officers from Windsor police's Amherstburg detachment were called to an intimate partner violence incident at an apartment on Dalhousie Street. Dispatchers learned from the victim that her husband had allegedly beaten her with a baseball bat.
Police arrived at the house and repeatedly knocked on the door, telephoned the callback number, and called out to whoever was inside, without a response. Police then learned that the man inside had a rifle, and they took cover.
By the time police entered the apartment, the man was unresponsive from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead later at a local hospital.
SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded in his report, released Tuesday, that there were no reasonable grounds to suggest the officers had anything to do with the man's death.
