Government-funded program promotes financial literacy in Windsor

Adults who would like to get a handle on their finances can now take advantage of a new program.

The John Howard Society of Windsor-Essex County has teamed up with the University of Windsor's Odette School of Business to offer the Financial Literacy Independence Program (FLIP). The program is fully funded by the federal government's Social Development Partnership Program. The funding was awarded in the spring of 2022.

The free eight-week course is for those 18 or older who identify as low-income. Topics such as banking, budgeting, credit building, and responsible financial behaviour are covered.

"By looking at the bigger picture and realizing where every dollar is going allows for greater potential for individuals to succeed," said program coordinator Devon Reeb.

The program is in a group format, with one-on-one meetings an option for a specific client's needs. Caseworkers work with individual clients to set up bank accounts, help with budgets, and develop a plan of what to do should a financial crisis arise.

Since its inception, FLIP has completed two cohorts.

Complete information on the FLIP program can be found on the John Howard Society of Windsor-Essex County's official website.
