Gift card scams claim two Windsor victims

Windsor police have put out a warning after two people reported being scammed online.

The financial crimes unit said the first incident involved the victim responding to a fake Facebook account, who posed as a family member. The scammer told the victim to add and trust another profile. Once added, the victim was told to share her address and banking information, plus photos of gift cards.

In the second incident, the victim got an email from someone claiming to be a friend, asking for help in the form of gift cards. The victim bought the cards and sent photos of the bar codes.

"Incidents like these serve as reminders to the public to stay vigilant when using online platforms," said Inspector David DeLuca. "Enable two-factor authentication. Don’t add anyone you aren’t sure of on social media, and take a close look at the email addresses sending you messages."

Police are asking anyone who may have been a victim to contact them.

Anyone with information should call the Windsor police's Financial Crimes Unit at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4330. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
