Windsor set to approve speed humps on more residential streets

Residential streets in Windsor's Wards 4, 9, and 10 could get new speed humps if it gets approval at Monday night's city council meeting.

The request is on the consent agenda, so unless a councillor asks for debate on the issue, it'll move ahead.

The city introduced its traffic calming study in 2005, with updates in 2015 and 2021. Last year, councillors voted to make it easier for residents to get speed humps installed on their streets.

The new requests are for Kildare Road between Richmond Street and Ottawa Street, Lone Pine Street between Provincial Road and Maple Leaf Crescent, and Partington Avenue between Columbia Court and Labelle Street.

A report to councillors said it would cost $105,000 to install speed humps on those three roads. It also recommended allocating another $105,000 to traffic calming in 2026 as part of the 2024 ten-year capital plan.

More and more residents are requesting the measures. The city is installing speed humps on Dandurand Avenue between Piazza Street and Northwood Street and Partington Avenue between College Avenue and Tecumseh Road West.

Residents on Avondale Avenue between West Grand Boulevard and Norfolk Street, Beals Street between Dougall Avenue and Huntington, and Academy Drive from Northwood Street to North Service Road also requested speed humps.

While speed humps may increase fuel use and emissions in the short term, they should cut greenhouse gas in the long run as drivers adjust to the change.
