The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has announced the return of West Nile Virus (WNV).
The first 2023 case involving an adult was reported Friday morning.
"Most people with WNV never develop symptoms and will not know that they have the virus," read a statement from the health unit. "Symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, skin rash, and swollen lymph glands. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe disease."
The virus is typically transmitted through certain types of mosquitoes.
To reduce your risk, the health unit suggests using a bug repellent with DEET, Icaridin, or a similar agent, and use as directed. Wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing and long pants, staying indoors when possible at dawn or dusk, and removing standing water also help keep mosquitoes away.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mehdi Aloosh also said the change in seasons does not mean people should let their guard down.
"Even though the temperatures are getting cooler, it is still important for everyone to eliminate any standing water around their home and take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites during the fall months," said Aloosh.
