The Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association has partnered with a downtown land owner to breathe some life into a vacant piece of property.
Over the next two weeks, 200 tonnes of sand will be brought in to create a volleyball court at 671 Ouellette Avenue. Spectator stands, fencing, and mesh will also be installed to complete the vision.
When it is done, the Beach Bash Tournament will be hosted in downtown Windsor.
"We want as many teams as we can get. We can accommodate anything that is thrown at us. When you are actually organizing a tournament you need the base to grow with it," said organizer Chris Lippert. "I can have a tournament with four teams, if four teams want to play down here this is going to be available to you."
The tournament, hosted by the DWBIA and Rotary 1918 will run from September 8-10.
All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to Rotary's mission to combat homelessness in Windsor and Essex County.
To find out more or register a team for the tournament, go to beachbash.ca.
After the tournament, the space will be available for groups to rent to host their own events.
"We really want to activate spaces downtown to give people a reason to come downtown and do fun things. This is the start, this is the first one," said Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino.
The land was donated by owner Mohammad Khan for a three-year period to the DWBIA.
