The United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County is much closer to its goal of 2,000 backpacks for low-income kids headed to school this fall.
Employees at the Windsor Assembly Plant donated enough backpacks and school supplies to fill a Chrysler Pacifica minivan.
Stellantis employees collected donations and school supplies for the Backpacks for Success program from fellow workers as they entered the plant.
They collected more than $6,200.
"Backpacks for Success is all about building confidence and ensuring that kids in our community have the right tools to start their school year. This support will go a long way to achieve that," said United Way CEO Lorraine Goddard.
The backpacks will be distributed to students through the United Way and other community programs later this month.
A recent Statistics Canada report said 19.3 per cent of families in Windsor are considered low-income.
