Community group asking for deferral on curling report

Windsor City Council will discuss the future of curling facilities in the municipality at Tuesday afternoon's meeting.

A report going to council recommends moving curling from Roseland Golf and Curling Club to the WFCU Centre.

Terry Fink with the resident-run committee Future of Curling in Windsor Essex has a lot of concerns.

"We still think that there are some areas that need further explanation. Certainly, the budget for the design of the new curling facility. We haven't seen any drawings and we haven't seen any details," said Fink.

Should curling move to the WFCU Centre, one of the three community rinks would be permanently transformed to a five lane curling rink. The Sun Parlour Female Hockey Association, Riverside Skating Club, and Riverside Minor Hockey Association have all expressed concern over the removal of a community rink at the the WFCU Centre.

The Sun Parlour Female Hockey Association has started an online petition to keep the third ice surface at the WFCU Centre.

"Sun Parlour Female Hockey Association would like to advocate to keep the Grenon rink as a surface that can be used for Minor Hockey, figure skating and other youth programs. Losing an entire ice surface will negatively impact our organization and the ability to provide hockey programming to the young athletes of Windsor and surrounding areas," reads the petition.

Fink said he does not want the hockey and skating groups negatively impacted by this decision of council.

"It's time for a deferral so that the city can develop the plans and show the plans and the city can do some community consulting with the ice user groups so that they understand it and they have full disclosure about what is going to happen," said Fink.

Windsor City Council meets Tuesday at 4 p.m.
