How to protect yourself from vehicle theft

After Windsor Police dismantled an auto-theft ring involving over 200 vehicles, many may be wondering how to protect themselves.

The ring involved 14 people from the Windsor-Essex region and many of the vehicles were stolen from the driveways of local residents.

The majority of vehicles recovered by police were Dodge Ram pick-ups and Jeep Cherokees. But, Bryan Gast, vice-president of investigative services with Équité Association said any vehicle with a push-button start is susceptible to this type of theft.

"Some groups are targeting a particular vehicle. This particular group was interested in Dodge Rams and Chrysler vehicle products which means they had the technology to steal it as well they had a destination for them to go to," sais Gast.

He said there are some steps people can take to protect their vehicles.

"Being aware, take the precautions, use the faraday pouch, use as many layers as you possibly can to make it harder for them to be successful to steal your vehicle," said Gast.

A faraday pouch blocks electromagnetic radiation to prevent key fobs from being hacked.
