Watershed statement issued for Thursday night and Friday

Thursday's severe storms left significant rainfall, prompting an alert from the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA).

ERCA has issued a watershed conditions statement for Thursday evening, ending at 10 a.m. Friday, due to concern about standing water in low-lying areas across Windsor-Essex.

"People are encouraged to take extra caution and avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events," said ERCA Water Resources Manager Tian Martin. "The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from flowing or standing water."

The region saw a series of severe thunderstorms move through Thursday. Environment Canada said dangerously high wind gusts and heavy downpours were possible.

As of 5 p.m. on Thursday, rainfall totals did not meet the criteria for a flood watch, though ERCA did not rule out that possibility.
