Unifor reaches tentative deal with Windsor Salt

The union representing workers at Windsor Salt announced the two sides have reached a tentative agreement.

Early Thursday evening, Unifor confirmed a tentative deal has been signed between the bargaining committee representing Unifor Local 1959 and 240, and the employer, Windsor Salt.

The union began legal strike over 154 days ago on February 17, 2023.

“This round of bargaining is the first since Windsor Salt was purchased by Stone Canyon Industries in 2021, a U.S-based private holding firm,” read a statement from Unifor.

More details about the deal will be made available after a ratification vote is held on July 26.

Unifor represents workers across three units at the mine. Local 240 represents the office employees while Local 1959 represents workers at the Ojibway Mine and a separate unit at the evaporation processing fields.

Nearly 250 unionized workers are on strike at the mine.
