Environment Canada is warning those living in a stretch from Windsor to London, and maybe beyond, about a severe thunderstorm that could strike just before supper time.
Warning Preparedness Climatologist Monica Zasuani said while the region can expect a few thunderstorms Thursday afternoon, the real concern is between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. when a cold front arrives in the extreme Southwest.
"Up to 110 km/h wind gusts, golfball-sized hail, 30 to 50 mm of rain is possible in a short period, and finally, we can not rule out the risk of a tornado," she said.
At 110 km/h, Zasuani said buildings could suffer structural damage, and some trees could topple. Hail that large could also damage vehicles and homes.
The agency has issued a severe thunderstorm watch, but other warnings and watches could be issued as the system approaches.
"If you see any lightning, you want to head indoors immediately," Zasuani advised. "Stay away from electronics. Try not to take showers or baths during that time."
In the event of a tornado warning, she said the best way to protect yourself is to head to the basement of your home. If you don't have a basement, she suggested staying in a room in your home, like a bathroom, until the danger passes.
