Unifor calls on Windsor Salt owners to return to the bargaining table

Hundreds of people gathered at Windsor City Hall today to show support for striking workers from Windsor Salt.

The 250 members of Unifor Local 1959 and Local 240 have been on the picket line for 133 days, since February 17.

Earlier this week, Stone Canyon Industries, the parent company of Windsor Salt, issued a statement that declared negotiations had collapsed after the union was given the latest offer that included "fair" wage increases.

Unifor National President Lana Payne said this public statement was made to create division between the workers and their union.

"It's a doomed attempt to come between the membership and their leadership. Not on our watch, not in our union, not today, not ever will this happen," said Payne.

She encourages the company to get back to the bargaining table and continue negotiations with the bargaining committees of 1959 and 240.

"It has been frustrating for them and for our members, but unlike this employer, we're not going to be bargaining in public," said Payne.

The union says they will continue to fight against language in the agreement that would introduce contract work. They say this is an effort by the company to break up the union.
