International conference outlines enhancement of semiconductors

The three biggest economies in North America made a series of pledges designed to help strengthen the continent's supply chain.

Canada, the U.S., and Mexico participated in the first North America Semiconductor Conference, held last Thursday and Friday in Washington, D.C. The meeting was held with the support of Arizona State University and the Semiconductor Industry Association.

During the meeting, representatives from the three governments agreed to share information on supporting a strong North American economy based on enhanced semiconductor research, which in turn will result in more effective supply chains for manufacturers.

The three countries also pledged investments in manufacturing and packaging semiconductor technologies to close gaps in supply chains.

Locally, the semiconductor issue has been prevalent at Stellantis' Windsor Assembly Plant, which has experienced periodic shutdowns due to supply issues and a worldwide microchip shortage that affected automakers.

Stellantis Canada spokesperson Lou Ann Gosselin told WindsorNewsToday.ca that the automaker did not participate in the conference.

The conference was the result of commitments made in January by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to reinforce economic commitments and create investments in all three countries.
