Does Colchester Beach need a safety audit?

Essex Town Council may have ultimately decided against partnering with Aqua City on a water park at Colchester Beach, but the experience has raised a valid question.

Should Colchester Beach undergo a safety audit.

Essex Councillor Jason Mayti plans to raise the question Monday night when he introduces a notice of motion calling for one by the Lifesaving Society.

He said during the process with Aqua City, residents told him they had some concerns about conditions at Colchester Beach.

"There were concerns about quality of water, about access to the beach and the marina, traffic, wave conditions sthat might be experienced," explained Matyi. "We're just looking to have all of the answers."

As far as Matyi knows there has never been a safety audit conducted at Colchester Beach.

"It would be similar to one that was conducted at Sandpoint Beach. It would make sure that all of the proper safety devices are in place and that we're mitigating as much of the risk as possible," he said. "I know we were intending to get one done with Aqua City which was what sparked my interest, to make sure we got one done."

Matyi's notice of motion will be filed Monday night for discussion at council's next meeting on June 5.
