The City of Windsor will have its 131st birthday celebration a little later than usual.
Mayor Drew Dilkens, in a video posted on his official Facebook page, announced that the City's public birthday party, and the annual Mayor's Walk, will take place on Sunday, June 11. The celebration is typically held over the last weekend in May.
"This year, we're switching it up just a bit," said Dilkens, adding that the annual Meet-a-Machine event at the WFCU Centre will proceed the day before, on Saturday, June 10.
The Mayor's Walk will follow its usual route, along the riverfront from Assumption Park, then circle the Great Canadian Flag before ending in the Vision Corridor near the Windsor International Aquatic Training Centre. There, visitors will be treated to free hot dogs and birthday cake, along with live entertainment and activities.
The Chimczuk Museum and Art Windsor-Essex will be open, with admission that day free of charge.
The 11th annual Meet-A-Machine will allow people to get up close and personal to work trucks, law enforcement, and first responder vehicles, while promoting childhood literacy.
The City of Windsor gained official city status in 1892, though before that it had been a village and a town.
