Local nurse honoured with Lois Fairley Award

Long-time nurse practitioner Mary Cunningham was honoured with this year's Registered Nurses Association of Ontario Lois Fairley Nursing Award.

Cunningham received a number of nominations from fellow nurses and patients.

"It's wonderful. It's a pinnacle in my career," said Cunningham. "I just do my job and I enjoy it very much so I was actually quite pleased that people thought that highly of me, the patients and the families."

Each year, the Lois Fairley Award is given to a nurse in Windsor-Essex who goes above and beyond to support their patients and colleagues.

"I think when you touch people's lives and you can help people, there's nothing more rewarding than that," said Cunningham.

The RNAO has been handing out the award since 2008.

It is named after Lois Fairley, a graduate of Windsor's Grace Hospital nursing program in 1955. She spent her career caring for patients at the hospital until her retirement in 1993.
