Windsor-Essex has a new Acting Medical Officer of Health

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has hired a new Acting Medical Officer of Health, and Doctor Mehdi Aloosh will start on May 1.

The current Acting Medical Officer of Health, Doctor Shanker Nesathurai, has been filling the role since Doctor Wajid Ahmed left the health unit in October 2021 for the Ontario Associate Medical Officer of Health position.

Nesathurai will stay on the job after May 1 to ensure a smooth transition.

"Doctor Nesathurai stepped in and provided exceptional leadership and guidance to the health unit for the past 20 months and we sincerely appreciate his hard work," said chair of the WECHU Board of Directors Fabio Costante.

Aloosh is currently a public health physician at Public Health Ontario. He is a practicing family doctor involved in research and teaching at McMaster University. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and has a Master's in Epidemiology from McGill University.

"The board of health conducted a thorough search for our new acting MOH, and we are so pleased to have Doctor Aloosh join the WECHU," said Costante. "His knowledge and expertise will complement the capable and professional staff with strong leadership and management."
