SafePoint consumption and treatment site will open to clients on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit received approval to operate from Health Canada on Friday.
Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare and its team of mental health and addiction specialists will run the day-to-day operations of the site.
"There is no other CTS in the province that is being run at this high expertise level for what we are providing the patients. We feel for Windsor-Essex this is the best possible outcome we could have," said Ken Blanchette, executive director with the Windsor Essex County Health Unit.
SafePoint will offer a variety of services, including the distribution of harm reduction equipment, drug checking services, and connections to other health care providers and social services.
'We've tried to create a very safe, non-judgemental place that they can have access to these wrap-around services to work their way out of the addiction crisis that they're in," said Blanchette.
Area residents and businesses may tour the site this Thursday and Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The consumption site will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
