OPP lay charges in fraud investigation

A Windsor person is facing a number of charges after a fraud investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police in Essex County.

The OPP responded to 14 reports of fraud across Essex County between February 28 to March 2. Two incidents led to a financial loss of over $15,000.

All of the fraud calls used the Grandparent of Emergency scheme where someone calls the victim posing as or on behalf of a family member who is reported to be in police custody and requires cash for bail.

Investigators identified a person of interest in one of the incidents after reviewing security camera footage.

As a result, a 25-year-old Windsor person is facing four charges of fraud over $5,000.

The OPP are asking anyone who has been the target of a grandparent or emergency scam to contact the police at 1-888-310-1122.
