Dilkens looking for a commitment for new 401 connection

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens had only one request at the provincial pre-budget consultations this week.

Now that the hospital is cemented in the plans and construction of the battery plant is underway, Dilkens is looking for a commitment from the province to create a connection to Highway 401 at Lauzon Parkway.

"It's a big ask, and I want to make sure that moving forward we're putting the roadmap forward and planting the seeds about what needs to happen to guarantee our economic success moving forward," said Dilkens.

Dilkens indicated the project will take several years to complete and could cost $100-million for the connection alone.

Planning is already underway to complete the extension of Lauzon Parkway, but Dilkens said they need to make sure it's not a road to no where.

"We've done a lot of pre-work to put us in this place, we know that it is probably going to be $100-million, or more, to bring all of the services down to the 401, but the 401 is provincial property so we need them to align their provincial budget with the city budget, so that we can make sure all of the infrastructure is in place to realize the collective goal," said Dilkens.

The province is collecting pre-budget consultation submissions until February 10.
