Essex sets up hotline for complaints about short-term rental units

Essex residents now have a number to call with their concerns about short-term rental units in their neighbourhood.

Most short-term rentals, like Airbnbs, are found in residential neighbourhoods where complaints about parking, noise, and licensing infractions could be an issue for those living nearby.

The hotline, 1-833-ESSEX-STR or 1-833-377-9787, is available at any time of the day or night. The town said a live agent would answer the phone and take the report.

As of January 1, all short-term rental units must be licensed in Essex, and owners who don't register could face a fine.

The town has a system of zoning regulations to ensure short-term rentals comply with municipal bylaws and maintain the character of the neighbourhood.

The application process is still open, and those who need to get a license can apply by visiting the town's website.

Short-term rental units located in a residential area must be operating before May 9, 2022, to be eligible. New and existing ones can open with a license in commercial, agricultural, and green districts.
