Province divvies up millions for transit across Windsor-Essex

Public transit in Windsor-Essex is getting a multi-million dollar boost from the Government of Ontario.

Premier Doug Ford announced up to $505-million for 107 municipalities across the province whose transit systems suffered financially during the pandemic.

Phase 4 of the Safe Restart Agreement will help cover the loss of revenue, operating costs, and allow systems to invest in priority projects.

Windsor is getting the lion's share of the funding locally, more than $3.4-million.

"Ensuring our communities can continue to prosper now and into the future requires that all levels of government step up to the plate," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, thanking the province for the contribution.

In addition to Windsor's share, Leamington will get $9,199. Tecumseh will get another $20,595, and there is $5,000 for LaSalle.

"This funding, on top of what has already been provided, will help ensure reliable transportation options are available for everyone," said Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney.

The funding announced on Wednesday builds on $2-billion in provincial and federal funding for municipal transit systems.
