The Gordie Howe International Bridge is increasing the amount it's dedicating to the community benefits program in 2023.
This year, the funding envelope is $200,000. Of that, $100,000 will be dedicated to supporting programming, events, and small infrastructure improvements in Sandwich and west Windsor. The remaining funds will be used in the Delray community in Detroit.
"We've always viewed this project as more than an infrastructure project, more than the construction of the bridge. We've wanted this project to benefit the communities that are hosting such a big undertaking and really hear their concerns, their priority areas and respond in a meaningful way," said Heather Grondin, vice president of corporate affairs and external relations.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is accepting applications to the 2023 fund until January 25. Grants will be awarded between $1,000 and $25,000. The selected projects will be announced in the spring of 2023. The funds must be used by July 2024.
"They are to be within community priorities that were identified when we were developing the community benefits plan, so connections, community partnerships, economic development, those are the key priorities," said Grondin.
More details about the application process can be found here.
There will be one more round of funding released in 2024.
