City overwhelmed by donations for displaced apartment residents

The City of Windsor has praised the community for stepping up to help residents displaced by heat issues at an apartment building.

Earlier this week, the apartment complex 1616 Ouellette Avenue was ordered to be evacuated after a busted boiler resulted in no heat in the units. Since then, the City's Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Andrew Daher reported that the community has not hesitated to help.

"The outpouring from the community has been really incredible," said Daher. "The donations are making a huge difference to the comfort of the residents having to rely on the temporary emergency shelter at Atkinson Memorial Community Centre."

So many donations have come that the City will share any future provisions with the Homelessness and Housing Help Hub (H-4).

The City opened the Atkinson Centre on Tuesday for those residents who could not find accommodations. About 40 residents are staying at the temporary shelter, which is being operated by the City and the Canadian Red Cross.

If you have new or gently-used coats, toques, gloves, or mittens to donate, you can do so by dropping them off at H-4, located at the former Windsor Water World, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day.

Residents who were displaced but are not staying at the Atkinson Centre are also encouraged to visit H-4.

Housing Information Services (HIS) is also working with the City and other community partners to provide resources to displaced residents, by assessing for housing needs, completing necessary application forms, and seeking other housing options. Landlords who have available one or two-bedroom apartments for rent are also being encouraged to give HIS a call at (519) 254-4824.
