Downtown Mission receives national accreditation

The Downtown Mission has joined a prestigious roster of non-profits recognized for organizational excellence.

The Mission has been accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards Program, which supports its non-profits in five key areas; board governance, financial accountability and transparency, fundraising, staff management, and volunteer involvement.

"This accreditation is the Good Housekeeping Seal of operational excellence in the not-for-profit sector," said Mission Executive Director Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin in a media release. "It’s the gold standard that tells our community, supporters, partners, donors, and volunteers that the Downtown Mission follows the best practices in all areas, including transparency and financial prudence to ensure the highest level of delivery for our programs and services."

The accreditation is the result of a year-long process, during which the Mission's operations were placed under scrutiny.

"Earning the Standards Trustmark demonstrates an organization's dedication to maintaining the greatest standards of integrity, efficiency, and transparency in its procedures," said Imagine Canada President and CEO Bruce MacDonald. "We congratulate the Downtown Mission on their commitment to organizational excellence and efforts to develop a better non-profit sector. We are delighted to welcome them to the Standards Program community."

The accreditation requires meeting a total of 73 standards in the five key areas.
