Offering those experiencing homelessness in Essex County "hope and a hand up," a new homelessness hub is officially open in Leamington.
"It reflects the reality that the housing and homelessness crisis is not simply a big city problem," said County Warden Gary McNamara at the new facility inside the South Essex Community Council building. "The County continues to grow, and we need support services like this."
The hub, a two-year pilot project between the county and Family Services Windsor-Essex, will offer visitors a host of services to help them find accommodation, access social services, get referrals to community agencies, and even get a bite to eat.
"The Essex County Homelessness Hub is a critical connecting point to support those experiencing homelessness to begin their journey to housing," said Housing Manager Barb Iacono with Family Services Windsor-Essex. "We have created a one-stop point of access coordinating multiple services."
The hub opened on September 12 but was introduced officially during Friday's event.
"The need is just as great in the county as it is in the city," said Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald. "This hub hopefully marks the beginning of what will be additional supports and services for residents in Essex County."
The hub is open Monday to Friday at 215 Talbot Street East from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Visitors can access food, restrooms, clothing, computers and phones, and quiet spaces for daytime rest. During the winter weather, it offers a safe respite from the elements.
