The Windsor Islamic Association Foundation has broken ground on a new five-building, 30-unit residential development for seniors.
The apartments will be owned by the foundation and rented to seniors to help them stay connected to the community.
"To have the opportunity to have them living close to the Mosque is a win-win situation because they can come and pray here five times a day just by walking across the street at the comfort of not being at risk," said Windsor Islamic Association Foundation Chair Dr. Fareed Denath.
The development will be located across from the Windsor Mosque on the corner of Dominion Boulevard and Northwood Street.
Foundation treasurer Atiq Nakrawala indicated they conducted numerous traffic and noise studies to ensure the planned development fits in with the existing neighbourhood.
"Just to make sure, to show council and to show the neighbours that we really are looking into every aspect of this corner to make sure that it's not going to add to what's already here. It's hopefully going to lessen it and make it better," said Nakrawala.
Traffic in this neighbourhood has been a concern for many years, with an elementary school, high school, and Mosque nearby.
Construction by the Rosati Group is expected to take around 14 months.
The foundation indicated many members of the Windsor Mosque have already expressed interest in the units.
