Enrolment jumps at region's two largest school boards

Did your child have to switch classrooms this week?  They were among many at the region's two largest school boards.

The Greater Essex County District School Board and the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board have gone on a hiring spree after enrolment climbed by hundreds of students.

The public school board has hired 50 new teachers to keep up with the increase, while the English Catholic board hired 60.

Enrolment at public elementary schools in Windsor-Essex jumped by around 1,000 over projections from last spring and about 600 students from last October 31st.

Communications Coordinator Stephen Fields said another 500 students enrolled in elementary and secondary schools this fall.

WindsorNewsToday.ca asked him what he thought was behind the increase in enrolment.

"It's difficult to pinpoint it to one particular factor," he responded in an email to WindsorNewsToday.ca. "I would simply suggest it's a combination of new Canadians, like Ukrainians and Afghans, as well as people who moved here from other regions."

Both boards finalized staffing arrangements this week.
