An inquest into the police shooting of a 33-year-old Windsor man more than four years ago will start on September 12.
The hearing will start at 10 a.m. and is mandatory under the Coroner's Act.
Matthew Mahoney died in the hospital on March 21, 2018, after an incident at Goyeau Street and Wyandotte Street East.
That morning, Windsor Police officers responded to a call about a man in the parking lot of the McDonald's restaurant with a butcher block full of knives. The man was allegedly threatening people nearby with the weapons.
One officer was stabbed during an attempt to arrest the suspect. Officers also tried to subdue him with a taser before taking lethal action.
Mahoney had struggled with mental health challenges.
The Special Investigations Unit investigated the shooting but cleared the two officers involved.
The inquest was announced almost a year after Mahoney's death in March 2019.
The inquest, conducted by video conference, will hear from 18 witnesses over ten days.
It will examine the circumstances around the shooting, and the jury could make recommendations to prevent future deaths.
