Kingsville to make a decision about mayoral vacancy

Kingsville council will decide Monday night if the mayor's position will be filled prior to the October election.

Long-time mayor Nelson Santos resigned from the position as of July 17, 2022.

The council must declare the office vacant at its meeting Monday. But since the declaration is within 90 days of the next election, the seat can stay vacant.

If the mayor's position stays vacant the deputy mayor will chair meetings and assume all other duties of the mayor until a new mayor is sworn in after the election.

Council could also decide to appoint an interested member of the current sitting Council to the office of the Mayor for the remainder of the term. This could be the Deputy Mayor or a Councillor.

If council decides to appoint someone to the position who sits on the current council that position could also be left empty or filled through appointment.

The municipal election will be held on October 24, 2022.

To date, Tamara Stomp, Laura Lucier, and Samson Zad are running for the position of mayor.

Interested residents have until August 19, to file nomination papers.
