Two Windsor-Essex beaches closed for high e.coli levels

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has closed two beaches and discouraged swimming at one other due to bacteria levels.

According to the health unit's latest beach testing results, Belle River Beach in Lakeshore and Mettawas Beach in Kingsville are closed due to abnormally high levels of e.coli contamination. The health unit has also recommended that no swimming be allowed at Sandpoint Beach in Windsor.

The bacteria counts at Belle River and Mettawas are in access of 1,000, while at Sandpoint Beach, it is just below 500.

E.coli levels at the remaining six public beaches in Windsor-Essex are below 100 and are considered safe for swimming. They are Cedar Beach and Cedar Island Beach in Kingsville, Colchester Beach in Essex, Holiday Beach in Amherstburg, Point Pelee North West Beach and Seacliff Beach in Leamington.

Complete information on beach testing can be found on the health unit's official website.
