That will be Matchett, without the second 'e'

It'll be Matchett Road from now on.

Windsor City Council has agreed to drop the final 'e' in the spelling of the street name.

Allan Matchett requested the change.

The road was named after his ancestor, Alfred Matchett, an early settler in the region who died in 1913.

At some point, the extra 'e' was added to the road's spelling. A report to councillors exploring the spelling change suggested that change came in the 1940s.

Monday's vote at Windsor City Council's meeting ends a decade-long battle for Matchett, who first approached the city and the Town of LaSalle in 2011. He was told it wasn't feasible.

The second request was met more hospitably in January 2021. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and LaSalle Mayor Marc Bondy said they would attempt to get it done.

The change will cost the city $6,580 from the budget stabilization fund.

Alfred Matchett owned several properties on what later became Matchette Road in the mid-1800s.
