The Windsor Police Service reported 104 incidents of use of force in the first half of the year.
Officers responded to 49,697 calls for service during the same time period.
"It has gone up in recent years, it was down in years before that, and if you look at the data from years before it was higher again. It does seem to correspond with escalation of violence in our city so the use of violence by others in our city will often be correlated to the use of force reporting by our police officers," said Acting Police Chief Jason Bellaire
Many of the incidents of use of force were concentrated in the Ward 3 area. Bellaire said there's a good reason for that.
"Ward 3 houses a lot of our entertainment areas, it houses a density of population, it is an area that we have a high volume of calls for service and when you add that up our interactions with individuals are increased," said Bellaire.
Every time a weapon is drawn or pointed it is considered a use of force and must be reported. If multiple officers respond to the same incident, each one has to file a use of force report.
There were four incidents of a firearm being discharged so far this year; each time it involved an animal that was hurt and could not be saved.
