City of Windsor planting more trees

There will be 2,000 more trees planted in Windsor this year.

The City of Windsor has committed $500,000 for tree plantings this year in woodlots and throughout neighbourhoods.

A recent assessment of the tree canopy in Windsor shows coverage has increased slightly, and now sits at 19 per cent.

"It's in line with average. It's still something that there's a commitment to expand," said James Chacko, senior manager of Parks and Recreation at the City of Windsor.

So far this year, 1,250 trees have been planted. The next round of planting will take place in the fall.

Any resident who does not have a tree on their front lawn can call 311 to request one.

Signs will be put out prior to the trees being planted.

"That actually helps to indicate where the tree is supposed to go," says Chacko. "When you see those signs, please don't move them.  They do actually serve a purpose to ensure that the trees are planted in an appropriate spot."

All trees planted in the city are native Carolinian trees that are specific to the region.
