Transit Windsor bringing back fireworks shuttle buses

A summer tradition returns to Windsor-Essex this month, and with it, a convenient way to get there and back.

For the first time since 2019, Transit Windsor is teaming up with Zehrs to provide a free shuttle bus service to the Ford Fireworks on the Windsor riverfront.

"Fireworks night has always been a chance to gather and enjoy our beautiful riverfront with those close to you while watching a one-of-a-kind fireworks show," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens in a media release. "Thanks to Transit Windsor and our friends at Zehrs, getting there is once again free and easy."

The June 27 spectacular is the first one in three years that is open to crowds. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Ford Fireworks were closed to public view. Detroit television station WDIV broadcast the display live, which it has done for roughly 40 years.

Transit Windsor buses will offer direct service from Devonshire Mall to a stop near Windsor City Hall starting at 6 p.m. Return trips begin immediately after the show and run until midnight.

Transit Windsor Executive Director Tyson Cragg says, however, that there's one wrinkle. Masks are required to ride.

"We hope people see wearing the mask for a few minutes as either a good extra safety precaution or even just a small inconvenience compared to the overall experience being delivered," said Cragg. "We’ll have masks on hand for those who forget, but we encourage everyone to bring their own."

The cost of the rides will be covered by the Zehrs stores in east Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle.

The Ford Fireworks are set to begin at approximately 10:06 p.m. and run for about half an hour. The rain date is Tuesday, June 28.
