ERCA issues watershed statement due to rainy forecast

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) is warning of possible standing water with heavy rain in the forecast.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement through Tuesday afternoon, with 25 to 50 millimetres of rain possible. Some of the heaviest downpours may have rain falling at 15 millimetres per hour.

To that end, ERCA has issued a watershed conditions statement for potential standing water in low-lying areas in Windsor-Essex.

"People are encouraged to take extra caution and avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events," said ERCA Water Resources Engineer Tian Martin. "The combination of slippery banks, waves, waves overtopping shoreline structures, and fast-moving water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its unseen hazards. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from flowing or standing water as well as shoreline areas."

The rain amount is below flood watch protocol, but ERCA said the elevated lake levels and the amount in the forecast prompted the statement.

The watershed statement is in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday. ERCA will continue to monitor the forecast and update accordingly.
