There are still a lot of homes being built in Windsor, but fewer than March of last year.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says housing starts fell 54 per cent last month compared to March 2021.
While construction on single-detached homes jumped 163 per cent, from 19 to 50 starts last month, it slowed on other housing developments.
Construction on townhomes, semis, and other multi-unit projects fell by 50 per cent. There were 20 starts in March 2021, but just ten last month.
It reflects what's going on provincially and nationally.
Comparing March to March, the agency said all housing starts fell in Ontario by 28 per cent, and 26 per cent across Canada.
"On a trend and monthly seasonally adjusted annual rate basis, the level of housing starts activity in Canada remains historically high, hovering above 200,000 units since June 2020," said CMHC's Chief Economist Bob Dugan. "However, the trend in housing starts posted a small decline from February to March."
He explained, just like in Windsor, the decline in urban areas across Canada was driven by fewer multi-unit projects. When it came to single-detached homes though, the rates were higher.
Housing sales were down five per cent in Windsor-Essex in March, but a lack of inventory continues to keep the market hot. The Windsor Essex County Association of Realtors said market activity was still up 15 per cent from a year ago.
