The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has reported, for the second day in a row, a man in his 80s passing away from COVID-19.
The man was living in the community and is the 598th Windsor-Essex resident to die from the virus since the pandemic was declared two years ago.
There were 152 new cases reported Tuesday by the health unit, a big jump from the 45 on Monday. The active caseload is up from 354 to 382.
The number of patients in hospital has risen. As of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, there were 67 patients with COVID-19 in the area's hospitals. At Windsor Regional Hospital, 52 people were being cared for, with 27 admitted primarily for the virus. Thirty-eight of those patients were fully vaccinated, with only one in the ICU.
Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare had five people in hospital for the virus at last check. At Erie Shores Healthcare, there were ten patients, with only three treated primarily for the virus.
There is a slight drop in the number of outbreaks currently being monitored by the health unit, with 19. Twelve of them are in retirement or long-term care settings, four are in hospital wards, and three are in the community.
