One weekend death from COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex

A man in his 80s is the latest Windsor-Essex resident to die from COVID-19.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit said Monday that the man, who lived in the community, passed away on the weekend. This brings the Windsor-Essex death toll for COVID-19 to 597.

The health unit reported a total of 259 new high-risk cases from the weekend, though that number may be an underestimate due to current testing guidelines. There were 129 new cases on Saturday, 85 on Sunday, and 45 on Monday.

Twenty-one active outbreaks are being monitored. Twelve of them are in long-term care facilities, five in the community, and four in hospital wards. As of Monday, there were no active outbreaks in workplaces.

As of 1 p.m. Monday, there was a total of 61 patients being treated for COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex's three hospital systems. At Windsor Regional Hospital, 45people were being cared for, with half of them, 23, admitted primarily for the virus. Thirty-one of those patients were fully vaccinated. Only one is in intensive care.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare had five people in hospital for the virus at last check. At Erie Shores Healthcare, there were 11 patients, with only three being treated for the virus.
