Windsor-Essex man latest victim of COVID-19

A man in his 70s is the latest Windsor-Essex resident to die from COVID-19, according to the local health unit.

The man was in long-term care. He is the 595th person in the region to pass away from the virus.

There were 106 new high-risk cases reported to the health unit Tuesday. However, that number could be an undercount due to current testing guidelines. The number of active cases has dropped from 317 to 300.

As of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, there were 50 people hospitalized for COVID-19. Windsor Regional Hospital was caring for 44 of those patients, with 34 admitted primarily for the virus. Thirty-three of those patients were fully vaccinated, with the rest unvaccinated. The hospital had just one unvaccinated person in intensive care.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare reported five patients at last check, and Erie Shores Healthcare was tending to one unvaccinated case.

The health unit is looking at 16 active outbreaks, nine of them in long-term care, six in the community, and one in a hospital.
